Chronic Pelvic Pain

Understanding Persistent Pain in the Pelvic Region—For Women and Men

What Is Chronic Pelvic Pain?

Chronic pelvic pain refers to discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvis that lasts for three months or longer. It can range from a dull ache to sharp or burning sensations, and often persists even after initial treatments.
It’s more than just a symptom, chronic pelvic pain can be a condition on its own, often with multiple contributing factors. While more common in women, it can affect anyone, including men.

Why Does It Happen?

Pelvic pain can stem from various systems in the body such as the muscles, nerves, organs, or a combination. Some common causes include:
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction – tight, weakened, or uncoordinated muscles
  • Nerve-related pain – e.g. pudendal neuralgia or spinal nerve irritation
  • Endometriosis or post-surgical scarring
  • Bladder or bowel conditions – e.g. interstitial cystitis or IBS
  • Unresolved inflammation or past injuries
In some cases, no single clear cause is found, which is why a thorough clinical assessment is so important.

Signs It Might Be Chronic Pelvic Pain

  • Pain in the lower abdomen, hips, or between the legs
  • Pain during urination or bowel movements
  • Discomfort during or after sexual intercourse
  • Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis
  • Pain that comes and goes, but never fully resolves
These symptoms can be frustrating, especially when tests don’t show anything conclusive. But that doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real or manageable.

When to See a Specialist

It’s worth getting checked if:
  • The pain has lasted several weeks or more
  • It’s affecting your ability to sit, walk, or sleep
  • Tests haven’t provided clear answers
  • The pain worsens with urination, sexual activity, or prolonged sitting
Chronic pelvic pain doesn’t have to be something you just live with. With the right care, it can be managed, and your quality of life restored.
