ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

Chronic Visceral Abdominal Pain

Deep, ongoing abdominal pain can disrupt your life. We help uncover the cause and provide personalised treatment—because pain without answers shouldn’t be your norm.

What Is Visceral Pain?

Visceral pain originates from the internal organs (e.g. stomach, intestines, bladder) and tends to be deep, dull, and difficult to pinpoint, often described as aching, cramping, or squeezing.
Unlike sharp pain from an injury, visceral discomfort may come and go, radiate to other parts of the body, and even cause symptoms like nausea or sweating.
You might not see anything wrong on a scan, but that persistent crampy abdominal discomfort still affects your day-to-day life.

Why It Happens

Visceral pain isn’t always due to visible damage or disease. Many people with chronic visceral abdominal pain have something known as visceral hypersensitivity, which is when the nerves around the internal organs are more sensitive than usual.
Some common triggers include:
  • Chronic irritation or inflammation, such as in IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) or interstitial cystitis
  • Nerve sensitivity or injury, sometimes following surgery
  • Adhesions or pressure from internal structures (e.g. scar tissue)
  • Stress and gut-brain dysregulation, which can amplify pain perception

What It Feels Like

Chronic visceral pain may not be sharp or sudden, but it can be just as disruptive. Signs to watch for include:
  • A constant or recurring ache or fullness in the abdomen
  • Pain that worsens with meals, stress, or bowel habits
  • Bloating, nausea, or sweating that doesn’t have a clear cause
  • Imaging and tests come back “normal,” but symptoms persist
This pattern is often seen in functional gut disorders, where pain exists even without clear structural findings.

How We Can Help

At Specialist Pain International Clinic, we provide individualised treatment plans that consider your symptoms, medical history, and possible nerve involvement. Our goal is to help you regain control over your symptoms, not just temporarily mask them.
Treatment may include:
  • Nerve-calming strategies such as nerve blocks or neuromodulating medications
  • Physiotherapy or soft-tissue work to ease structural contributors
  • Lifestyle coaching to address gut-brain connections and stress triggers
We know that pain without a clear scan or test result can be frustrating. That doesn’t mean it isn’t real, or treatable.

Is It Time to Get Checked?

If you’ve had persistent abdominal pain for over 3 months with no clear explanation, it’s worth investigating. You don’t have to keep guessing whether it’s “just stress” or something you have to live with.
